About the Cello
The cello (violoncello) is the baritone voice of the bowed string family, which also includes the violin, viola, and double bass. It has four strings tuned in perfect fifths — C2, G2, D3, and A3 — and a playable range that extends from C2 to around C6 in professional hands. Held upright between the knees with an endpin resting on the floor, the cello produces a tone that is richer and darker than the violin, with an expressiveness that many composers compare to the human voice.
How a Cello Produces Sound
A cello produces sound through the same fundamental mechanism as the violin: a bow coated with rosin is drawn across the strings, causing them to vibrate.
